After an hour’s transfer from the airport, the first stop, the Arctic Retreat awaits. Nestled in the forest between pine trees heaving with snow and the frozen Rane River, a small collection of panoramic log cabins provide a personal and exclusive stay for guests.

For the next three days, guests may enjoy the warmth and luxury of their timber log cabin. A fireplace and floor to ceiling windows, ideal to marvel at the northern lights complete the hygge experience. Allow the warm waters of your private outdoor hot tub to ward off the night chill, as you search the skies for glimpses of the aurora. Prepare to be surrounded by the silent wilderness.

Each evening, a divine 3-course meal will be served in the small and cosy log timber restaurant. A stay here includes all meals and is hosted by a team of local chefs, service staff and guides.

In summer, enjoy kayaking, fishing, and berry picking.

Start each day with a sumptuous breakfast, then the difficult decision of either kicking back with a book and enjoying the peaceful nature, or joining an arctic adventure in the snowy landscape. There are a wide array of daytime activities that can be pre-booked. Choose to join a snowmobile safari, drive your own dog-sled team, snowshoeing in the wilderness, horse riding or join a moose safari - plenty of options if you wish to get more active.

As the limited daylight passes over the horizon and darkness once again covers the land, anticipation grows, waiting for the appearance of the elusive northern lights. The secluded location of the retreat means that viewings can be seen from the camp. But if you prefer to explore the night time wilderness, strap on a pair of snowshoes and let the local guide take you on a hunt for the aurora, taking you to higher ground in search of clear skies, and fingers crossed the dancing aurora.

Start the day with a visit to the wood-fired sauna and let this staple of Nordic life ease any aching muscles. The perfect accompaniment to the heat of the sauna is a dip in the frozen river, or you can lie in the snow, if you’re brave enough!

A visit to Swedish Lapland provides plenty of opportunities to sample local customs. Visit a Sami family and learn about their life as reindeer herders and their culture. Perhaps try your hand at ice fishing or nordic skiing, the traditional method of getting around on the snowy trails.

In the evening, relax in the comfort of your hot tub, enjoying your last night at Arctic Retreat waiting for the aurora to make an appearance and bid you farewell, for now!

It is time to leave your new found friends at Arctic Retreat as you make the journey to the spectacular Arctic Bath. This floating hotel has been designed to represent an era when the river was used to float logs downstream from the forests to the mills, creating a totally unique hotel experience. Open year round, with an ethos of wellness, thoughtful design, glorious nature and fine food, you can feel your cares drift away as you enter the calming atmosphere.

With only 12 exclusive cabins, 6 tucked away on the shore and 6 floating on the river, locked within the ice during the winter months, you will spend the next two nights being pampered by the attentive staff, enjoying the luxurious spa and wellness facilities available.

A stay at the Arctic Bath includes full spa access during the hours 09.00 to 22.00. The spa holds two dry saunas, one steam sauna, two outdoor jacuzzis and an open-air cold pool.

Arctic Bath

Arctic Bath pays homage to Sweden’s forests drawing inspiration from the convoys of logs that have floated the length of the Lule River for centuries. Guests are invited to the spa’s hot and cold baths and to overnight in floating rooms and elevated cabins. Choose between luxurious floating hotel cabins or standalone land cabins on stilts. The hotel rooms sleep two and accessed from the shore via private footbridge. The spacious land cabins sleep five and come with floor to ceiling windows, pellet stoves and decking. The restaurant features Swedish delicacies on the seasonal menu. The main activity is spa but there’s plenty on offer for adventures all year round. Spot the Northern Lights in Autumn and Winter or enjoy long days under the midnight sun in summer when river activities beckon. Warm up and cool down in the mix of hot and cold baths and saunas. Opt for spa treatments or relax in the lounges. The spa’s circular form creates a sheltered environment, perfect for wellness and rejuvenation in nature.

A stay at Arctic Bath is all about increasing your sense of wellbeing. During the summer months a cooling dip in the Lule River is a great way to cool off after time in the sauna. In winter time it’s still possible for a quick dip in the “isvak”, which means a refreshing dip in the cold and icy water. It might be a bit more challenging, but so much more invigorating.

You can book a wide selection of different treatments from head to toe that will leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated, making your stay even more luxurious.

After a full day relaxing at the spa or experiencing one of the more active pursuits, end your day with a 5-course Arctic Culinary Dinner experience at the restaurant, created by the head chef using the finest locally grown produce.
