Classic Icehotel Break

As the old cliche suggests “it has to be seen to be believed”. Well this is certainly the case of the ICEHOTEL in Swedish Lapland. There have been different versions of this unique concept, but the original ICEHOTEL near the town of Kiruna, 200 km above the Arctic Circle was the first and is still the best of its kind. First created in 1989, it has been welcoming adventurous guests for over thirty five years.

Each season, the River Torne freezes and so begins the yearly cycle of building and ice harvesting for the construction of the famous ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjarvi. Guests travel from all corners of the globe to experience a night in one of the intricately crafted ice rooms which remain at a constant temperature below freezing. It gives off an ethereal glow both inside and out and simply takes your breath away.

On our Classic Icehotel Break you get the chance to sleep overnight in one of the amazing Ice rooms, as well as the well appointed warm rooms, enjoying delicious meals from the restaurants, taking part in some of the wonderful winter activities and keeping watch for the aurora borealis, creating an enchanting short break, longer holiday or honeymoon.

This is one of those bucket list moments not to be missed!

Icehotel

The ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjarvi is the world’s first hotel made of ice and snow first appearing on the wintry landscapes of northern Sweden in 1989. Since then, the ICEHOTEL has reappeared in a new guise each year – always pushing the boundaries of innovation and creativity and attracting artists and sculptors from all around the globe. The result is an art exhibition of snow, ice and light with imaginative and enchanting themes in each of the unique suites. Guests can stay in an ice room, art suite or deluxe suite – all of which stay a constant temperature just below freezing. Thick winter sleeping bags and warm outer clothing are provided to help guests stay comfortable. There are also warm hotel rooms and Nordic chalets. There are saunas and shared bathroom facilities as well as a choice of three restaurants nearby. The ICEHOTEL restaurant serves Nordic cuisine serving delicacies like reindeer, moose, Arctic char and bramble berries, prepared by Michelin-trained head chef Alexander Meier and his team. The Chef’s Table 12 course tasting menu offers fine dining in a private and personal atmosphere. Meanwhile, the nearby Homestead restaurant offers a more relaxed and informal dining and rustic, homecooked dishes. Inside the restaurant, there’s a cocktail bar and in the ICEHOTEL itself, there’s an ice bar for a chilled drink. For guests staying outside of the winter season, rooms are inside the ICEHOTEL 365 – a year round ICEHOTEL inside a grass-covered roof.
After your night in the Ice Hotel you will be up early - take some time having a nice hot sauna and hearty breakfast before meeting up with your guide for the husky sledding excursion. There are two times to choose from, a morning or afternoon trip. There are other dog-sledding excursions available, including mushing your own husky team. Afterwards you will enjoy a well deserved rest to warm up before you will be able to check into your warm accommodation and we recommend a relaxing evening with dinner in either the Ice Hotel or the Homestead before heading out to look for the northern lights down by the river Torne.

After breakfast, show off your creative side with an Ice Sculpting class. The guide will show you the technique using the hand tools provided, then create your own ice sculpture from pure Torne River ice. The experience is relaxing and quite addictive as your piece of art evolves. The afternoon is free to enjoy the peaceful surroundings - walk to the village, across the frozen river or explore the magical Art rooms of the Icehotel itself.

In the evening head out for a thrilling Snowmobile adventure in search of the Northern Lights. Driving in pairs, hit the trails through the forest away from the light pollution. The guide will make short stops to talk about this natural phenomenon and local area, stopping towards the end of the tour for a two-course rustic dinner in a wilderness cabin by the open fire.

Ice Sculpting

Ice Sculpting

The class starts with the instructor talking about how the block of crystal-clear ice is harvested each year from the Torne river, followed by an introduction to ice sculpting and how to use the tools supplied. Then you get to create your very own master piece and see how the ICEHOTEL's artists and sculptors turn a simple block of ice into something magical. The process is engrossing and you wish you have more time to be creative.
