ITINERARY

On arrival at Kiruna airport you will be met and transferred the short distance to Mattarahkka Lodge where you will be greeted by the friendly team and receive warm arctic clothing for the duration of your stay.
 
After the day travelling, what better way to relax and unwind than soaking in the rooftop hot tub with panoramic views of the night sky, giving you the opportunity to keep watch for the dancing aurora. Your private session will be allocated on arrival and may be on a different day. Each evening from 17.00 the sauna is ready for all guests to use as much or as little as they like during their stay. It’s a very ‘Scandinavian’ thing to do and a wonderful way to relax and feel energised.

In a remote location on the outskirts of Kiruna in Swedish Lapland lies the small family run Mattarahkka Lodge. It offers a warm and cosy stay with opportunities to see the Northern Lights and take part in several winter activities. The small and intimate lodge is perfect for couples or friends travelling together. With an inviting open-plan lounge with fireplace and comfortable chairs to relax, the lodge is a fantastic choice to enjoy an authentic and memorable arctic experience. The lodge has just 7 double rooms with en suite bathroom and small loft area which can accommodate a further single bed suitable for children. Based on traditional cuisine using local ingredients, the head-chef Alexander Meier and his team lovingly prepare meals served in the restaurant. The packages have all meals included, starting with dinner on the arrival day to breakfast on departure day. Some meals are rustic and served while out on excursions or in the tipi tent at the lodge. All the excursions included are in small groups and overseen by professional guides, giving you a real personal taste of Arctic adventure. The focus is on providing longer trips taking into account the weather conditions, ensuring you will always have the best possible experience. The lodge has free use of snowshoes and Nordic skis for guests to explore nature at their own pace. In true Scandinavian style, the lodge has a relaxation area with a sauna which is open every evening from 5pm, free for guests to use, as well as an outdoor jacuzzi which guests can use in a private 90 minute session as part of their stay.
A buffet breakfast is served from 8.00 am each morning, with a selection of hot and cold dishes, tea, coffee and juices.

Visit Hakan at a local Sami village and immerse yourself in the traditional lifestyle of the indigenous people of the Arctic. Learn about their culture, history and life as a reindeer herder. The experience includes a lunch by the crackling fire and a short sleigh ride pulled by reindeer through the winter wonderland.

Enjoy a 2-course dinner around the crackling fire in the traditional tipi tent located outside the lodge. Then you receive driving instructions and safety information on how to drive a snowmobile before heading off to the top of Mount Ednavaara, offering great views over the Arctic tundra and Abisko mountain range, far from light pollution and the ideal place to keep watch for the magical aurora.

In between the daily activities you'll also have some time to relax at the lodge. There is an open plan lounge area with fireplace - the perfect place to unwind with a book or game of cards. There is a small bar where you can purchase a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, as well as tea and coffee making facilities which are available free of charge. However, please note if you are taking part in snowmobile tours there is a zero tolerance on alcohol and you will not be able to drive.

Transfer to a local husky kennel for a dog-sledding experience. You will receive safety information and instructions on how to handle your very own husky team. Driving in pairs, the passenger will sit comfortably on the sled with reindeer skins for warmth, while the driver takes control and heads out through the sparkling frozen winter wonderland with old pine tree forests and frozen lakes gracing the landscape. Along the route you’ll get a chance to swap drivers and take a break enjoying the magnificent scenery. Upon returning to the kennels, say a big thank you and give the friendly dogs a cuddle.

If after the scheduled activities you're still keen to explore the surroundings, there are some snowshoes and cross-country skis you can use to venture out on a circular trail around the lodge, taking approximately 30-40 minutes. Then in the evening take a well-deserved sauna to warm up and relax in this traditional Swedish way. A fantastic end to an amazing day!

After receiving safety information and driving instructions, jump on the snowmobiles on a 5 hour safari, driving in pairs, taking you to specific places along snowy trails heading to the edge of the Arctic tundra where you have amazing views of Sweden’s most famous mountain range. Experience the stunning scenery, wildlife, local Sami culture and some of the area's hidden gems. A short break is taken on a frozen lake to brew some coffee over a fire and try your luck at some ice-fishing. The unique light and colours of the Arctic will add to the magic of this adventure. After the tour, you’ll be served lunch back at the lodge and have a chance to meet some reindeer in the corral.
