Great Archipelago Cycling Tour to Aland

Embark on an adventurous self-guided cycling journey that begins in Turku, Finland’s oldest city and former capital. And as you pedal deeper into the outer archipelago, you’ll encounter mesmerising landscapes, travelling from island to island and visiting wonderful locations including Naantali, Nauvo, Kokar Island and Mariehamn on the main island Aland.
 
From lush and green countryside to rugged and rocky coastlines, each island boasts its own unique charm, stories and natural beauty. Ferry trips, ranging from small cable ferries to a larger cruise boat, allow you to explore this captivating region. Immerse yourself in the untouched Finnish island nature, bask in the enchanting light of the long Nordic summer nights, and savour delicious local specialties like fish and the products of small breweries.
 
Cycling the winding red roads and numerous ferries creates an exciting loop tour that seamlessly blends city life, medieval castles, and maritime adventures. ITINERARY

Arrive in Turku, the gateway to the Archipelago and stay overnight in your city centre hotel, on breakfast basis. There are a wide selection of cafes and restaurants in the city to choose from.

Accommodation on first and last night at the Turku Radisson Blu Marina Palace Hotel - the hotel is located in the city centre within walking distance of Market Square and offers stylish rooms and suites, some with river views It has an on-site restaurant ‘Grill it!’, offering a good selection of dishes, and serving a delicious breakfast buffet.

 

On the first day's cycling, there will be a member of staff (at the hotel reception) from the bike tour company looking after the ground arrangements. They are at hand to give out the e-bikes (touring bikes are picked up from the nearby rental shop), and they will also have a small welcome meeting, so any questions you may have about the route or bikes can be asked.

Say goodbye to Turku, for now! Perhaps visit the Turku Castle in the morning (optional) before your cycling tour begins. Start the journey by cycling along the beautiful Turku riversie and onwards through the colourful nature of Ruissalo Island before heading to your next stop and overnight in Naantali with its wooden houses and marina. Time here to explore the Old Town and enjoy a sunset drink by the sea. The night will be spent in a Spa hotel, where you can relax after time in the saddle.

Accommodation at Naantali Spa Hotel - situated by the waterfront, a short distance from Naantali town centre, the hotel offers a relaxing stay with its spa facilities and treatments. The hotel has a selection of restaurants, serving dishes ranging from Thai cuisine to traditional Finnish options. All rooms include a seating area, flat screen television and free WiFi. 

Continue the journey towards the archipelago through lush countryside and passing small villages. Then embark on your first cable ferry and feel the sea breeze on the open waters. You have the option of continuing to Nauvo or taking another ferry to the historically interesting Seili Island, with an extra short 4 km trip. Head back to Nauvo for an overnight stay in a cosy hotel, next to small boutique shops, restaurants and a sandy beach. Please note, the additional ferry trip is not included.

Accommodation at Nauvo Hotel Strandbo - the hotel is centrally located in the port of Nauvo, where you can relax and watch the archipelago life pass you by. The cosy rooms, some with balconies, have a private bathroom. The hotel’s restaurant serves an a la carte menu and a buffet breakfast is available each morning. 

Today you’ll experience true Island hopping as you travel further east, taking two ferry rides and across bridges. After a relaxing 2.5 hours ferry journey with beautiful sea views you’ll end up in the outskirts of the Great archipelago on a small island called Kokar, known for the wildlife, especially seals and the ruins of a Franciscan monastery. Once here, spend the afternoon relaxing by the sea or take a 26 km cycling tour of the island - it seems like you’re in another world. The summertime daylight is practically endless, so there is no need to hurry to your overnight accommodation .

Accommodation at Hotel Brudhall, Kokar - beautifully situated in a calm bay in the centre of Kokar, you can admire sea views from the hotels rooms and enjoy good food in the restaurant. The perfect combination for a stay in the archipelago. Room facilities include a private bathroom and free WiFi.

After breakfast, take another ferry to Langnas, located on the main island of Aland. Here you can cycle on the recognisable red roads towards the only town in Aland: Marienhamn. This lively seaside town has plenty of restaurants, cafes and sightseeing opportunities, such as museums like the Pommern ship to beautiful villas and boutique shops with local handicraft products. 

You have the next two nights in Mariehamn, a chance to relax and enjoy the amenities in the town.

Accommodation for 2 nights at Hotel Adlon - the hotel has an excellent location by the western harbour, enjoying sea views and just a few minutes from some of Mariehamn’s main attractions, restaurants and shopping area. The hotel has a pizzeria, bar and outdoor terrace where you can sit with a cool drink enjoying the views. Room facilities include a private bathroom, television and free WiFi.

 

Today you can explore Aland Island. Head north west and visit the medieval Kastelholm Castle, the Jan Karlsgarden open-air museum and Vita Bjorn Prison museum. Perhaps have lunch in restaurant Smakbyn and enjoy a taster in the Aland Distillery. On the journey you’ll cycle past a potato chip factory and continue towards Bomarsund fortress ruins (an additional 10 km each way). Along the way enjoy historical sites as you cycle through the beautiful countryside.

Cycling distance today - 52 km with optional 20 km extra

On your last full day, enjoy some time in Mariehamn and your last chance to cycle on the island before embarking on a larger cruise ship from the marina in the afternoon. The larger ship allows you to see the archipelago scenery from another perspective while enjoying a meal in one of the restaurants onboard and a drink or two on the sun deck. You will arrive back in Turku in the evening, with your final night in the city hotel.

Your cycling adventure comes to an end - you can spend more time in Turku and the surrounding area, or continue with your onward journey.

Please note - the total distance cycled is 190 km, with the possibility of adding longer tours. Most of the route runs on tarmac, but some parts will be on gravel roads. The terrain is mostly flat, but there are some steeper ascents and descents as you approach the ferry crossing areas. The bike rental is based on touring bikes, but it is possible to upgrade to e-bikes for an additional charge. The bike rental includes helmet, panniers and a holder for a mobile phone for navigation.

The tour operates with set dates, starting on a Saturday on the following dates: 14th and 21st June 2025; 12th, 19th and 26th July 2025; 02nd and 09th August 2025.
